This placemat was created through a collaboration between artist Toshiyuki Fukuda and sashiko embroidery artisan Kenichi Ohazama. Fukuda and Ohazama utilized a wide range of techniques to translate abstract illustrations onto fabric with mathematical precision. The sturdy textile is made from 100% cotton woven into a strong quilted jacquard weave that easily washes away spills. Each Sashiko placemat is individually cut from a larger textile, making each pattern slightly different from the others.
About Sashiko Embroidery
Sashiko, which translates to “little stabs” in Japanese, is a hand-sewing technique that originated in ancient Japan. Sashiko stitches were traditionally used to decorate and repair homespun peasant clothes in times where resources were scarce. Using geometric patterns with common motifs like waves, mountains, bamboos, or overlapping diamonds, sashiko combined decoration with reparation, with its resulting beauty demanding to know: why just mend and make do when you can mend and make better?

The handmade Drip Bowl showcases two important parts of the making process: craftsmanship and spontaneity. Each piece is fired with a homemade “kiln glaze” that changes color in the kiln so that not even the maker knows what the piece will look like until it is finished. The result is a feathered effect that drips down from its edges like watercolor seeping through paper. At once colorful and serene, this artful bowl turns your weekly farmers’ market bounty into an instant still life.
Because Sakuzan pieces are made to order, some pieces may exhibit some discrepancies in glazing. The glaze features miniscule cracks: this is intentional and an integral part of the ceramic minou yaki aesthetic tradition.
About Sakuzan
Nestled in a small workshop in the mountain village of Toki, Sakuzan is a ceramic studio that consistently pushes the envelope of mino ware ceramic tradition. Every detail that defines Sakuzan tableware is designed to complement the food that will be served on it. From adjusting the rim of a cup to facilitate drinking to choosing a glaze that complements the type of food served, each piece is crafted with the user in mind. To hold each piece is to witness its formative dignity; to use it is to understand its functional beauty.

Made from a mixture of clay minerals, the Hasami Teapot has an earthy, coarse texture that is that is both rough and refined. Designed for the artful home, this teapot serves up your favorite brews with a rustic sensibility.
About Hasami Porcelain
Hasami Porcelain is molded by hand and rendered with an organic, almost primitive texture. The collection is modular by design; mugs, plates, and bowls all share the same diameter, allowing for easy stacking for storage or display. Inspiration for its stacking mechanism comes from tiered boxes used in Japanese cuisine, now repurposed for modern living. Hasami Porcelain pieces are hand-made in Hasami, Nagasaki, where ceramics have been the main craft industry for the past 400 years.
Please note: because of the handmade nature of Hasami pieces, some pieces may experience slight variations in glaze and colors. Please contact us at info@rikumo.com with any questions.
