More Information About Tableware

Japanese Tableware

Japanese plates, bowls and dinnerware from the kilns and workshops that make them. Buy a single plate, or build a dinnerware set over time.

The makers

1. Marumitsu Poterie

Marumitsu Poterie's ceramists hand-paint the narrow tokusa stripes on their asabachi bowls, one piece at a time.

2. Yumiko Katase

Yumiko Katase's silver glazes settle into abstract patterns across black porcelain.

3. Gato Woodworks

Gato Woodworks make their Tsumugi bowls in the Yamanaka Onsen region from Japanese zelkova, lacquered so the grain shows through.

4. Tojikitonya

Tojikitonya's Kairagi Don Bowl is Mino ware, finished with a glaze applied so thinly that it crackles into a pattern that grows more intricate the closer you look.

Building a set

Rice bowls, shallow asabachi bowls for pasta or salad, small plates for pickles and sides, and trays to carry them out. Closer to how a Japanese table is laid than a matching twelve-piece box. Materials run from porcelain and glazed clay to lacquered wood, so care differs from piece to piece; check each product page for its materials and care.
