Banko-Yaki is a Japanese ceramic technique local to the Mie Prefecture that embodies ideals of eternity and constancy. Dating back to the 18th century, Banko-yaki ceramics offer unique heat resistance and a beautiful, almost primitive composition. These handmade pieces continue to honor an ancient art in a modern world by reshaping tradition to fit the needs of the future.

Watering is very important for the health of your bonsai. Water deeply when the top 1-2” of soil is completely dry, being careful not to disturb the soil. To help provide proper humidity, you may place the container in a tray filled with gravel and water.
Your bonsai is not a houseplant, and as such, it will grow best outdoors. During the spring, summer, and fall months, look for a location that receives diffuse or dappled light throughout the day. During the winter, it will become dormant. The Juniper variety selected in the starter (Juniper Procumbens ‘Nana’) is very cold hardy and can tolerate freezing temperatures. However, when temperatures become significantly cold (less than 14°F), overwintering techniques can be used to protect the roots. These techniques include moving it to a protected (but unheated) area like a garage, storing it in a refrigerator, or burying the roots (pot and all) in the ground.
PRUNING + TRAINING
Pruning and training your bonsai with scissors and wiring requires a dose of creativity and will vary depending on your personal preference. We encourage you to explore this concept further and develop your own approach and philosophy.
To encourage continued growth, you may choose to apply a diluted all-purpose fertilizer (e.g. 10-10-10 NPK) during the growing season.
