Higonokami Folding Knife
This cult classic pocket knife has been produced in Japan since 1904. Made from carbon steel for strength, the Higonokami pocket knife features a hand-forged blade that folds into the base and a small latch to reopen it safely. The Japanese characters for Higonokami are engraved on the metallic base, letting you carry a little piece of Japanese history with you wherever you go.

Higonokami Knives
In the 19th century, a blacksmith in Kyushu is said to have added a simple lever to a basic pocket knife to help open and close the blade more easily. The knife proved to be successful and a guild was formed to oversee the manufacturing of the knife. Only those belonging to the guild could manufacture the knife and use the respected name Higo No Kami, which translates to "Lord of Higo" in honor of the Lord of Kyushu. Today, each higonokami knife is still handmade by the last remaining maker in the guild, Nagao Seisakusho.

What Makes This Japanese Folding Knife Unique?
Forged in the heart of Japan’s Miki region, the Higonokami folding knife is a work of historical relevance and practical excellence. In response to sweeping societal changes of the late 1800s, traditional Japanese swordmakers were forced to pivot and began applying their blacksmithing expertise towards the production of utilitarian products such as pocket knives, farming equipment, and home goods.
Many of these skilled blacksmiths settled in the Miki region, eventually establishing a knife-making guild in 1899 that later trademarked the Higonokami blade. Only members of the guild were allowed to produce these prized blades.
During the peak of Higonokami folding knife production, as many as 50 blacksmiths contributed to this growing trend. Unfortunately, following a violent sword attack in the early 1960s, a strict anti-knife campaign quickly diminished blacksmithing profits, eventually leading to the downfall of all but one remaining member of the guild. Our Higonokami knives are produced by this final workshop, which is proudly operated by 5th-generation craftsmen of the Nagao Seisakusho family.
Despite the Higonokami folding knife’s simple design features, several standout characteristics uphold this blade’s exclusivity and world-renowned reputation:
- Superior materials: The blade features San Mai high carbon steel, a quality steel that is incredibly durable, affordable, and easy to sharpen. The handle features folded brass, providing secure blade protection and an ergonomic grip.
- Balanced dimensions: The 3” blade and 4” handle are optimal for practical uses and ease of handling. Both the weight and length of this functional blade enhance the overall feel and dependability of this blade.
- Legacy is infused into the forge: Beloved by traditional samurais of old and casual knife collectors of today, each elegant blade is a tribute to the resilience and fortitude of Japanese crafting tradition. While other blade makers have moved on, the last-standing blacksmiths of Higonokami stand resolute in their commitment to superior and dependable blade quality.

Occasionally, you can cover all metal surfaces and the folding mechanism with a light coating of oil to prevent rust and maintain smooth folding operation.
