SOLD OUT! - All of our Marimo plants and air plants have gone to new homes.

Marimo Moss Balls (Aegagropila Linnaei) are naturally occurring algae growths that slowly form into a ball in the wild at a rate of about 5mm per year. Regarded as a good luck charm, they have been known to live over 200+ years and are often handed down as an heirloom through the generations.

When you order a Marimo, you will receive one healthy plant, a care card, and a lidded glass container (choice of two sizes) with pebbles and pieces of binchotan charcoal so you can create the perfect habitat.

How to Care for Your New Marimo Moss Ball

Marimo balls require very little maintenance to survive, but there are measures you can take to ensure they thrive. We suggest the following:

  • Habitat - Marimo balls grow in freshwater and can survive in either a closed or open container. Tap water is fine, but your Marimo will stay cleaner in filtered water. You should change 50% of the water every two weeks. They are commonly added to fish tanks, but be sure to do some research as many fish consider Marimo a delicacy.
  • Temperature - Marimo grow naturally in cool lake beds. We recommend keeping the water below 76° F. If your water gets too warm, you can place it in a refrigerator for up to 24 hours at a time.
  • Light - Marimo balls like soft diffused light and should avoid direct sunlight for long periods. Turn or rock them regularly to ensure even lighting.
  • Cleaning - If you notice your Marimo is turning brown or losing its round shape, gently squeeze and reshape it under cold water.
  • If your Marimo ball starts to break apart, don’t fret, roll any broken pieces into a ball shape and it will take on a life of its own. If you’re lucky, your Marimo may develop a small bump that eventually grows and falls off. Congratulations on your baby Marimo!
