This handsome bowl is made in Yamanaka Prefecture, where lacquering and woodworking have been practiced by craftsmen for centuries. The Tsumugi bowls are made from Japanese Zelkova wood, which is prized in Japan for building traditional Tansu furniture and Taiko drums. Lacquered in a way that showcases the natural wood grain, the Tsumugi bowl is an artful way to enjoy soups and rice dishes. Perfectly symmetrical and smooth to the touch, this stunning piece is a testament to the perfection that can be achieved by a pair human hands.

At first glance you might mistake this little cup for a metal mug, perhaps made from a dark burnished copper, but it is in fact completely formed from clay. Handmade by artist Keiichi Tanaka, this mug features a series of softly dented markings near the base, leftover reminders of an artist’s hands pressing upon the clay. The tall cup makes a fine tumbler while the short cup lends itself well to espresso and strong beverages.
About Keiichi Tanaka
Keiichi Tanaka’s work spans from a lifelong fascination with the beauty of functional objects. Inspired by the visual poetry of agricultural tools and instruments, Tanaka creates softly textured glazes and unexpected shapes for otherwise common-use objects. His rustic, contemporary pieces clash with archaic shapes to invoke an atmosphere of "time accumulation": hazy, textured objects that could be remnants of a long-ago past or a not-so-distant future. Tanaka has exhibited widely throughout Japan and Europe, and currently lives in Saitama, Japan.

Bring a little warmth to your kitchen with this modern kettle, skillfully crafted with the traditional Japanese arare (hailstone) pattern. A tetsubin, or cast iron tea kettle, was once a status symbol of emperors and scholars. Today tetsubins are important parts of the Japanese tea ceremony, and tetsubin craftsmen take at least 15 years to master the trade. Forged by hand in the workshops of Iwachu, this small style is perfect for an individual, well-steeped cup of your favorite tea.
About Iwachu
A master maker of tetsubin iron teapots since 1902, Iwachu is widely recognized as one of the best cast-iron craftsmen in the world. The artistry of each piece is rooted in its traditional Japanese craftsmanship: led by generations of ironsmiths, their workshop produces beautiful, long-lasting ironware with a human touch.
